Porn!
Well, not really. Still, this rather interesting Victorian (or rather, Victorian based) novel deals primarily with Sugar – a street walker who seeks to better her lot in life. Fortunately, she finds one William Rackham, who seems to find her of great interest.
In equal parts charming, clever and disgusting (seriously – Victorian times sound ROUGH) this is an intelligent and authentic seeming novel based in one of the more interesting times of British history. The attempt to better oneself would be a story at home in any era, but the increased societial pressures on a woman and prostitute in this particular time add to the respect felt for Sugars efforts. The majority of the other characters, though well realised, seem to be slaves to their wants with little or no appriciation of their lot nor a desire to change it.
